Pharmaceutical, Medical Device and Biotechnology
Creating one top healthcare list from our previous Top 50 Pharmaceutical, Medical Device and Biotechnology surveys proved quite interesting. With firms such as J&J that have products in more than one of the industry specialties, we had a total of 123 companies, which we narrowed to 100 for the consolidated list. These companies play a formidable role, with the revenue for 2014 totally over a trillion dollars, making up over 75% of the industry.
Pharmaceutical companies dominate in terms of revenue size. However, they’ve seen over 50% of their revenue decline year over year. At the same time, 70% of the top medical device and biotechnology companies are growing their revenues.
The results of the 2015 mergers and acquisitions will change the landscape for the next year’s lists. Medtronic/Covidien, Zimmer/ Biomet and CareFusion, Smith & Nephew/Arthrocare, St. Jude/ Thoratec, J&J divesting Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, AbbVie/ Pharmacyclics, Pfizer/Hospira, Activis/Allergan, Valeant/Salix – the impact will be interesting. Had the Medtronic/Covidien acquisition happened in 2014 we would have seen our first medical device company reach the top 10. Covidien’s 2014 $10.66B in revenue, added to Medtronic’s $17.00B would have created a 27.66B stream, topping AstraZeneca’s $26.09B. The combined revenues would give Medtronic the highest medical technology revenues, exceeding J&Js ’s $27.52B in medical device Revenue.
